About This Manuscript

The Nash Papyrus is one of the most important Hebrew manuscripts ever discovered. Dating to approximately 150-100 BC, it held the title of oldest known Hebrew biblical manuscript in the world for nearly fifty years — from its acquisition in Egypt in 1898 until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. Its twenty-four surviving lines contain the Ten Commandments, followed immediately by the Shema: "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4). This pairing does not appear this way in any biblical book — it is a liturgical text, physical evidence of the Scriptures Jewish believers were reciting in daily devotion in the generations before Jesus. When Jesus named the greatest commandment, He quoted the very words on this fragment. This is the Wes Huff Collection edition — the first Old Testament manuscript in the Manuscript Shop.

Textual Significance

The Nash Papyrus predates the standard Masoretic Hebrew text by over a thousand years, and several of its readings align with the Septuagint — the Greek Old Testament used by the apostles — including its ordering of the commandments.
