Here, on one sheet, are the two texts at the very center of the faith of Israel: the Ten Commandments and the Shema — “Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one.” These are the words every faithful Jew recited daily. And when Jesus was asked to name the greatest commandment, he reached for this very sheet's language: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might.
The Nash Papyrus is one of the most important Hebrew manuscripts ever found. For nearly fifty years — until the Dead Sea Scrolls surfaced in 1947 — it was the oldest known Hebrew biblical manuscript in the world. It predates the standard Masoretic text by over a thousand years, and several of its readings align instead with the ancient Greek Septuagint. Its pairing of the Commandments with the Shema is a liturgical arrangement found in no single book of the Bible — a window into how these words were prayed.
