A conversation that survived
eighteen centuries.
On this scrap of papyrus, smaller than a credit card, are the words of Jesus standing before Pontius Pilate — the recto preserving John 18:31–33, the verso 18:37–38. Pilate asks the question the whole Gospel has been circling toward: “What is truth?”
Papyrus 52 was copied within a generation or two of the Gospel of John itself. Its very existence shows that John was already being read and copied in Egypt — hundreds of miles from where it was written — within decades of its composition. For a book so often accused of being a late invention, this fragment is the quiet, physical rebuttal.
