Late 2nd-Early 3rd Century AD Romans 5:17-6:14 / 1 Thess. 5:5-28 Egypt (Chester Beatty Papyri) Chester Beatty Library / Univ. of Michigan

Two of Paul's letters on a single ancient leaf, with Romans 5-6 on one side and 1 Thessalonians 5 on the other, on real Egyptian papyrus.

About This Manuscript

Papyrus 46 (P46) is one of the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts of Paul's epistles, dated to the late second or early third century AD. This museum-quality P46 replica preserves Romans 5:17-6:14 on the recto, Paul's teaching on sin, death, grace, and newness of life in Christ, and 1 Thessalonians 5:5-28 on the verso, including Paul's exhortations on holiness, sobriety, and final blessing. Two letters on one leaf, tangible evidence of how Paul's writings were collected and circulated together as authoritative Scripture from the earliest centuries of the Church.

Textual Significance

P46 is a cornerstone of Pauline textual criticism and one of the most cited early manuscripts in New Testament studies. The presence of both Romans and 1 Thessalonians within the same codex leaf is significant evidence for how Paul's letters were organized and transmitted together in the early Church. Its textual readings have directly shaped modern critical editions of the Greek New Testament including the NA28 and UBS5.

About This Replica

This museum-quality Pauline manuscript replica is produced through an intensive, multi-week hand-crafted replication process on real Egyptian papyrus. Careful attention is given to manuscript scale, Greek letterforms, line spacing, and layout.
