DATE SCRIPTURE DISCOVERED HELD AT
AD 125–175 John 18:31-33 / John 18:37-38 Oxyrhynchus, Egypt John Rylands Library, Manchester

The Wes Huff Collection edition of the oldest known New Testament manuscript, printed on real Egyptian papyrus and presented in a hand-etched floating acrylic frame.

About This Manuscript

Papyrus 52 (P52), also known as the John Rylands Papyrus, is widely regarded as the oldest surviving New Testament manuscript in existence. Dated to approximately AD 125-150, this ancient papyrus fragment preserves John 18:31-33 on the recto and John 18:37-38 on the verso, recording the exchange between Jesus and Pontius Pilate. Its existence demonstrates that the Gospel of John was already being copied and circulated in Egypt within decades of its original composition. This is the Wes Huff Collection edition, the premium etched acrylic version of the most popular item in the Manuscript Shop.

Textual Significance

P52 is the single most cited manuscript in biblical apologetics and early New Testament studies. Its early date provides foundational evidence against late-dating theories of the Gospels and anchors the transmission history of John's Gospel firmly in the second century. The essential artifact for anyone making the case for the historical reliability of the New Testament.

The first one I received had decent blemish in the papyrus, so I sent them a picture and they replaced it lickity split with a return label for the previous one. The replacement is perfection. It brings me great joy when I look at it and imagine the great pains the scribes took to write down the precious words of our Lord and Savior. Not to mention how close to the autograph P52 is, it’s awe inspiring to say the least. The quality of the facsimile is extremely detailed, Great Job Manuscript Shop 🙌, this is an heirloom piece for sure.

Truly a museum-quality replica! I compared it to a high-resolution photograph of the original. Both full and partial characters are accurately reproduced, even the shape of the manuscript and the holes in it are accurate. It looks IDENTICAL to the original. I couldn’t be happier!

I requested this as a gift. My wife would have never known about it if I hadn’t specifically requested it. I’m excited to own it. It looks like fragments I have seen in Dead Sea Scrolls traveling exhibits and manuscript literature. I am just beginning to scrutinize it closely, read the text, examine the papyrus condition, etc. Looking forward to sharing it with friends in my study group, and displaying it in a place of honor in my office!
