The story on the leaf

666 on one side,
the Lamb on the other.

Turn this leaf over and the whole tension of Revelation is in your hands. The recto carries the mark of the beast — the number no reader forgets, six hundred sixty-six. The verso answers it: the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him the hundred forty-four thousand, the Father's name written on their foreheads. Two marks, two allegiances, one leaf.

𝒫47 is one of the earliest and principal surviving witnesses to the Book of Revelation. Part of the great Chester Beatty Papyri, it brings us within roughly a century or two of John writing on Patmos — the closest the physical record takes us to the vision itself. For a book whose imagery has shaped two thousand years of hope and dread, this is the oldest thread we can still hold.

“The mark of the beast on one side, the Lamb on Mount Zion on the other — from one of the oldest copies of Revelation.”

Why scholars keep coming back to it
One of the earliest and principal witnesses to the Book of Revelation — carrying both the mark of the beast and the vision of the Lamb.

As part of the Chester Beatty Papyri, 𝒫47 is among the oldest surviving copies of Revelation and a key source behind the modern critical text. Few manuscripts hold so much of the book's imagery on a single leaf — 666 on the recto, the 144,000 on the verso.

This is beautiful, but as with my purchase of John’s partial manuscript, it would have been much more beautiful (and meaningful) if the exact verses being displayed were indicated on the container, or at least as a paper attachment. Otherwise well done!
